The Kent Wedding Network wants your day to be special and unique – and so we will be publishing a series of articles to help inspire you!

Our first is all about the business of wedding entertainment.

Let Me Entertain You!

Traditionally the most entertaining thing we could hope to see at a wedding was the Best Man messing up his speech or a drunken Uncle making a fool of himself on the dance floor.

Weddings are changing and modern couples are looking for new ways to make their day not only special but also unique. So how do you go about choosing entertainment that is not only right for you but is also exciting and different for your guests?

The last people you need to think about entertaining on the day are yourselves - you will be constantly on your toes having your pictures taken and being the centre of attention. But your guests will quite often have long periods hanging around or being sat at a table with people they have never met before.

So a good place to start is to have a look at the flow of your day and consider where you will be and what your guests will be doing. Try and identify any times when they may feel bored or even self-conscious.

Another important consideration is the style and mood you wish to set. This will of course be largely dictated by your choice of venue. So do try and choose entertainment that complements the feel of your day and that does not exclude any of your guests by being over-loud or obtrusive.

Different types of entertainment work well during the various parts of your day. Soothing and sophisticated music can set the scene as your guests arrive for the ceremony so consider a solo instrumentalist such as a guitarist, harpist or why not consider a classical ensemble.

This unobtrusive style of music also works well after the ceremony while the photographs are being taken. But beware at this point some of your guests could be getting bored so some interactive entertainment such as a caricaturist or a close-up magician may be worth considering.

Entertainers such as these also work well during the meal and often in the gap between the end of the main wedding breakfast and the start of the evening celebrations.

Also at this time you might need to think about the children. A clown or kid’s magician or even a crèche with crafts, games and other activities are among your options here.

If you are planning a themed wedding then why not consider some mediaeval entertainment. Mixing traditional music with magic, juggling or even fire-eating performed by costumed entertainers can set a very special mood for the day.

Music has always been a mainstay of wedding evening entertainment and today there are many more options available to you than in the past.

Discos and bands remain firm favourites. But in the 21st century, the age of celebrity, why not astound your guests with a personal appearance by a World-Class act such as Abba, Tom Jones or even Robbie Williams!

Sound expensive? Not a bit of it! For nowadays there is a wide choice of quality tribute acts offering you the chance to entertain your guests with “world famous” singers and bands at a realistic price.

But whoever you book make sure they have the right credentials!
